WAN’s connect networks with a fast speed communication. When it comes to a network the size of the network, this limits it to how far a connection can be established. Thus, using a WAN, will allow longer distance connection for the network taking pressure from the problems with the longer connection away.

One type of connectivity option for the establishment of a WAN would be, a Dedicated Connection. This connection is fulltime, and remains the main connection for good. When this type of connection is implemented, the cable gets leased, so that it is not just the bandwidth being leased, and this provides the user greater use.

Another connectivity option for the connection of a WAN would be, using a Switched Network Connection. By using a Switched Network Connection, users have access to share bandwidth that is the same for all the users.

There are 2 known types of switched networks.

  • 1) Circuit switching - this is a connection between two points, like the ISDN, or dial-up, which is a temporary connection.
  • 2) Packet switching – this allows a connection between multiple points. It takes data and converts it to smaller packets then sends it across networks.
  • 2 Advantages of a Dedicated connection would be:

  • 1) It provides the user greater use of the bandwidth.
  • 2) The connection remains permeant, and the cable gets leased.
  • 2 Disadvantages of a Dedicated Connection would be:

  • 1) The delay, like when you order the leased line, it takes time for the provider to install the line between the locations of the two.
  • 2) The cost of the leased line is a factor that affects the price, and triggers how much bandwidth is needed for your line.
  • 2 Advantages of a Switched Network Connection would be:

  • 1) The numbers of broadcast domains are reduced.
  • 2) VLAN’s are supported, and this helps with the logical segmentation for the parts, and the broadcast domain uses splitting. This allows the network to be split.
  • 2 Disadvantages of a Switched Network Connection would be:

  • 1) It doesn’t perform like a router with limiting the broadcast.
  • 2) Configuration and proper designing, also handling of the multiple packets needs a lot of configurations.
