DUE BY FRIDAY 11:59:59 PM CT worth 50 percent: Stanley is an Asian-American male. He is 15 years old, and he is in 10th grade. It is the first day of school at the new high school, and he is excited to meet his new classmates. His first class in the morning is Algebra. Once the teacher had everyone in the room introduce themselves, she asked Stanley to go to the board and demonstrate how to complete a complex algebra problem she had written on the board. When Stanley hesitated, the teacher said “Oh come on… you are Asian, you are all good at math.” Stanley was mortified. He did not like being singled out, and he also was not good at math. All through school, Stanley barely got by with Cs.
This type of stereo typing isn't as harmful as others because it a stereo type that is used as a compliment, although some others do not take it that way and carry out about it. In this situation, in the students position, he took this as a way to part him from the rest of the students. This is like saying to a Chinese person, what would you do if you were jumped by an American? and the Chinese person replies, "I do not know". Then person then says, "all Chinese people are good at karate, "what do you mean"? This would make the Chinese think they are saying, he is not Chinese acescent or of the origin, there can be multiple outcomes. Other stereo types hurt like my eyes are Chinese, or we are having sushi for lunch, these are stereo types used in all schools against foreigners, to hurt them or make fun of the abundantly with all the other students. Those stereo types would hurt more than others. Yes, it is a compliment to be thought of as intelligent, this makes a person have good self esteem and it pushes them to do better at what they do and keep up the work. Thinking of someone's as intelligent is great and better than stereo typing them with a compliment to bother them. This causes low self esteem and the person not to like the other person.
Yes, the teachers compliment is appropriate because of this, she is saying something nice about him to make him try harder at what he does, or even help him to realize that Asia is far away and they study a lot and are very smart it's a statistic made by the United States Government, and Americans have high standards at which, he can keep up with. So, that's a good compliment to use in the classroom, "intelligent". The teacher shouldn't have anything done to her because of this. She pointed out that he was intelligent and it wasn't in a funny manner. This sets aside all the jokes and points out what he can accomplish if he uses his knowledge correctly.
Some stereo types are acceptable by society because we have a freedom of speech law. Stereo types like she's a brainiac, or she's a computer geek, or Professor Tom is a real smartie pants, are acceptable they point out an intelligent side or makes people realize that they love what they do, and it is all they do. That's the whole point about stereo typing, someone will always misunderstand and others will laugh and say nice things back or make one right then and there about them. There's a billion outcomes and they are infinite, so stereo typing an be a little hard to stop and understand, also cope with due to some of them really hurting you bad.
